Vendor Feature: ECBG Studio

I encountered Erin Martin and her team at ECBG Studio when my good friend and colleague, Rebecca Pope of Something Profound Weddings, brought us together to work on an amazing styled shoot at Chicago’s Room 1520. The moment Erin delivered our stunning marbled cake decorated with gold leaf for the session, I knew I had to share her story and artistry on the blog!

How did you start ECBG Studio, and what makes your business unique?

Like most bakers, I started at home from my parents kitchen in 2012. After about 5 years, and putting myself through culinary school, I moved to Chicago in order to pursue more avenues of my career. I worked for a great cafe in Rogers Park called Smack Dab as their head baker and eventually they helped me start my own business out of their kitchen — ECBG Studio. I finally had my legal licensing and LLC! Since then I have steadily grown each year to the point where I now have 5 employees working out of our professional shared kitchen, and I am even looking for a permanent bakery of our own!

ECBG Studio is unique because of how relatable, fun, outgoing, and expressive I am. I put myself into every single cake and Instagram post. I share the deep and hard, while also sharing the light and fluffy. I advocate publicly for underrepresented groups and regularly donate funds to local organizations helping those groups. I recognize it is about so much more than cake, it is about the loved ones we are celebrating and the moments we are eternalizing.

What sorts of clients and events do you serve?

We work with all Chicagoland couples planning their wedding cake, as well as people looking for birthday cakes, anniversary cakes, graduation cakes… cakes for all occasions!

Tell us a little about your process. How do you work with clients?

We are currently offering a wedding cake tasting to go. I LOVE this offering because it allows couples to try our most popular cake and frostings from the comfort of their own home. They then schedule a consultation call with me so they can discuss their dream wedding cake. It’s so easy and enjoyable! And tasty, too!

What are your top 2-3 tips for having an amazing wedding experience?

  1. I would say try to find vendors you trust enough that on the day of you can let go of any worry or stress. When you KNOW you are being expertly taken care of, you can relax and enjoy your day!
  2. Try to find vendors and aspects that reflect your style and personality. If you are loud and colorful, incorporate color! If you love the water, incorporate beach themes, or choose a venue near the lake!
  3. Try to practice good communication and advocate for yourself when you’re not vibing with an idea or vendor!
