Should we do an engagement session? 6 Engagement Session Reasons to Consider
Perhaps you had some photographs taken when he got down on one knee to propose, or perhaps you’re busy with work and family and wedding planning, and the thought of adding an engagement session sounds like one more thing on an already long to-do list. Engagements are some of my favorite photo sessions to photograph because they allow me to connect with my couples, help my clients feel comfortable with the photographic process, and…they’re a lot of fun!
Engagement Session Reasons
I encourage all of my clients to include an engagement session when they book their wedding collection, and here are some of the reasons why I feel it’s one of the best pre-wedding investments you can make:
It’s a great way to connect with your photographer and it helps them get to know you as a couple
An engagement session is a low-stress opportunity for you, your fiance, and your photographer to get to know each other before the hustle and bustle of the wedding day is upon you. For couples, it’s a great chance to get comfortable with your photographer and learn how they cue and prompt throughout the shooting process; in turn, the session helps the photographer understand your likes and dislikes, which can lead to more personalized images on your wedding day! After the engagement session, you might feel like a close friend is showing up to take your wedding photos!
Get to know the camera
If you’ve never had a professional portrait taken before, you might be nervous getting in front of a camera — those big lenses can be intimidating! An engagement session helps you get those nerves out of the way well in advance of your wedding. Many of my brides and grooms tell me they don’t know how to pose and aren’t comfortable being in front of the camera. After the session, they tell me how much fun they had!
Celebrate your engagement
One of the most important engagement session reasons to consider is that this is a once-in-a-lifetime season, so why not celebrate your engagement with some beautiful photographs?! If you book your session far enough in advance, you can use your engagement images on your save-the-dates or invitations — an added bonus!
Show off your personal style
An engagement session is a great opportunity to showcase and celebrate your style as a couple. Partner with your photographer to select outfits that showcase the two of you looking your best! If you’re curious about what to wear to your engagement session, then check this out. And, if there’s a fur baby in your life, this is the perfect opportunity to include them as well!
On your wedding day, our photo opportunities might be limited by a variety of factors: time, weather, and locations, just to name a few. An engagement session gives us the freedom to make beautiful couple’s portraits together when the weather is just right. And since we won’t be going to the wedding ceremony right after your portrait session, we can be flexible with the length of session and photo locations. You can even plan a destination engagement session! Epic mountain hike engagement portraits? Couple’s session at that little cafe where you had your first date? You got it!
This is a perfect opportunity for your makeup trial
If you’re not planning a bridal session, I highly recommend you book your makeup trial for the day of your engagement session. That way, you can see how your makeup will photograph and communicate any necessary adjustments to your makeup artist well in advance of the wedding.
