Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer

Sometimes it can feel overwhelming when you sit down to interview a vendor for your wedding day team, and a wedding photographer is one of the most important vendor interviews you’ll conduct — they’re with you throughout the day (you might spend more time with your photographer than anyone beside your spouse on your wedding day!) and they’ll produce one of few tangible keepsakes you can take with you after the wedding: heirloom photographs. So, it’s doubly important to make sure you’re asking the right questions. I’ve gathered this list of questions from real client consultations, and I encourage you to adapt and personalize them for your unique situation!

16 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer

Is my wedding date available? Will you be the one shooting my wedding? If not, can I meet the photographer who will be on site?

I confirm your wedding date in my calendar as soon as I receive your inquiry so I can let you know if I’m available right away. My associate photographer, Stacy, and I personally shoot every wedding booked with Joshua Harrison Photography. We’re available for consultations via Zoom, Skype, and over coffee, too!

How long have you been shooting weddings? How many weddings have you photographed?

I’ve been a wedding photographer since 2015; I’ve shot over 45 luxury weddings.

questions to ask your wedding photographer

Will you have any assistants with you?

I always bring my dedicated associate photographer, Stacy, to every wedding I photograph. She helps me capture important details like the groom getting ready and alternate angles of your ceremony and reception. I reserve the right to bring an additional, non-shooting assistant in case your event calls for extra lighting equipment, props, or backdrops.

Can we see a full wedding gallery?

Every wedding consultation I conduct includes a full walk-through of a real couple’s wedding album. Showing you the album helps you understand how I capture the day from a storytelling perspective, and gives you valuable insight into how I partner with clients to build their wedding day timelines. Additional digital galleries are always available upon request.

Can we request a specific shot list?

I always ask clients for a shot list they’d like to use for family formals — this ensures that we don’t miss any important moments with your loved ones. I welcome Pinterest boards and other inspirational lists for use throughout the day, as this helps me understand your style and what’s most important to you on your wedding day. I cannot guarantee that we can capture or recreate every image from a full-day list, as every wedding is unique, and circumstances outside our control can often change our shooting conditions. Sometimes it’s best to go with the flow, too!

How would you describe your photography style?

I love to create wedding images that are elegant and authentic — true representations of you and your love, captured in a bright and clean aesthetic that will stand the test of time.

How would you describe your working style on the wedding day? Do you like to blend in and capture candid moments, or do you take charge and orchestrate images?

Many of my past brides have appreciated my calm, orderly demeanor on the wedding day. I’ll be by your side to help you get from place to place on time, while creating opportunities for you and your special someone to have real, genuine moments together that we can capture and include in your wedding gallery. Once we get to your reception, it’s my job to candidly document your celebration!

Do you offer retouching, color adjustment, or other corrective services?

Every image I deliver is processed using digital darkroom techniques to emulate the timeless aesthetics of real film. In addition, I review your images and correct for lighting, color, and framing. Additional retouching including object removal, body contouring, etc. is available for an additional charge.

What is included in your standard package? Can I customize a package to fit my needs?

Every wedding package includes at least 8 hours of continuous coverage with two photographers and a secure online gallery of all your final images. I’d love to customize a package that’s as unique as your celebration.

What about your travel fee?

All weddings within the Chicago and Milwaukee metro areas are free of any travel charge. For other locations, I assess a travel fee for any destination beyond 60 round trip miles from my place of business in Round Lake Beach, IL. questions to ask your wedding photographer

Do you have a backup plan in case of broken equipment or illness?

I always carry multiple cameras and record images to duplicate memory cards, so if there’s a technical issue with one piece of equipment, all of your images are safely captured, and we can continue documenting your wedding without interruption. In the event of illness or accident, I maintain a roster of trusted alternate photographers who can fill in on your wedding day at my expense.

How will you and your assistants be dressed?

Professionalism is very important to me, so all Joshua Harrison Photography associates will arrive at your venue dressed in business attire – slacks, dress shirts, jackets, and vests in accordance with the weather. We prefer neutral colors like black, grey, and white so we don’t stand out on your wedding day.
